How Do You Learn to Write Plays? - Issue No. 17
The Fifth Wall - Israeli Drama Magazine #17
30.7.2026
How do you learn to write plays? There is not yet an institution in Israel whose main purpose is playwriting but you can study dramatic writing as a course in some institutions that teach theater, communications or cinema. There are also private courses, writing workshops and development incubators, where you can learn the basics of writing for theater. Many of the playwrights active in Israel today are generally autodidacts who learned from reading, watching, working in the field, and especially from trial and error. There are many ways to learn playwriting, and there is a lot to learn in the field, so we are hosting here 7 experienced and successful playwrights, from whom there is a lot to learn, to answer questions, give tips, warnings and recommendations for novice and experienced writers, and share about learning the craft of playwriting from their experience as playwrights, dramaturges, students and teachers. Roey Maliach Reshef, playwright and teacher, in an article on the motivation to write, and the difference between writing for ourselves and writing for others. And as usual, you will also find benefits and discounts for newsletter readers, news, and open calls for theater creators below. Enjoy Yigael Sachs Editor and Art Director ![]() |
